Season 2016 | 17

OERKNAL AT GAUDEAMUS | 4 thru 10 September

Oerknal kicks off its 2016/17 season as ensemble-in-residence at Gaudeamus Muziekweek in Utrecht! As part of this residency we will work closely with three composers nominated for the 2016 Gaudeamus Award: David Bird (1990, USA), Giulio Colangelo (1986, Italy), and James O'Callaghan (1988, Canada). Premieres by each of these composers - along with pieces by Patricia Alessandrini, Reiko Füting, Lewis Nielson, and John Zorn - will be presented throughout the week at TivoliVredenberg in addition to a reprise of our wildly successful collaboration with jazz trio De Beren Gieren.

READING SESSION WITH OERKNAL | 4 September

Six to eight young composers write sketches/new works for Oerknal and will have the opportunity to work on their sketch together with the ensemble in an open presentation.

GAUDEAMUS LATE NIGHT | 7 September

David Bird - drop (2015)

Oerknal joins forces with Quatuor Bozzini to present David Bird’s drop for eight strings, which explores the interplay between light and sound. A stroboscope is an integral part of the composition. Quatuor Bozzini performs Organismo Aperto no. 1 by Giulio Colangelo. The young Italian uses electronics to seek out new and distinctive textures for string quartet.

Oerknal | De Beren Gieren - combination piece (2014/16)

Music written in the 21st-century is, by definition, referential. Operating in an age of unprecedented access to staggering amounts of information, modern composers find themselves sifting through and assimilating (or rejecting) a multiplicity of genres, aesthetics and influences. The music of today is in constant dialogue with what has come before, is overloaded by artistic and social developments; it is poised beneath falling sand from an hourglass. This concert explores these varying influences, presenting works that overtly reference Renaissance madrigals, quote revolutionary Latin American poets, explore spatialization and incorporate theatrical elements, all in a quest to take that which has come before and transform it into something essentially modern.

Oerknal presents work by Gaudeamus Award nominees David Bird and Giulio Colangelo as well as John Zorn and a reprise of their collaboration with De Beren Gieren as part of an all-night mini-festival.
